Železný kříž byl založen 1.9.1939 a udělován ve dvou třídách. II. třída byla většinou prvním vyznamenáním pěchoty za statečnost a úspěšnost v boji a bylo jím vyznamenáno asi 3.000.000 mužů (27 žen). Nositelé Železného kříže z roku 1914 byly vyznamenáni sponou přidělenou původnímu Rytířskému kříži (Spange 1939 zum Eiseren Kreuz 1914). Byl zavěšen na červeno-bílo-černé stuze a nošen na druhé knoflíkové dírce na tunice nebo v knoflíkové dírce klopy u tuniky tankistů. Někdy byla také nošena spona. Želežný kříž I. třídy byl předáván za další hrdinství a nošen na levé klopě, obdrželo jej asi 450.000 muzů (2 ženy). Byl ozdoben svastikou a letopočtem 1939. Na zadní straně byl stříbrný s letopočtem 1813. Byl předáván s certifikátem a malou dárkovou krabičkou.

Založen v roce 1.9.1939, byl nástupcem Pour le Merite nebo "Blue Max" z W.W.I. Pravděpodobně nejvíce ceněné vyznamenání v německé armádě. Ritterkreuz byl dáván za hrdinské činy. Byl nejvyssím vyznamenáním a za dalsí hrdinství k němu mohly být přidány Dubové listy, Meče a Diamanty. Celkem bylo uděleno 7.318 RK (42 spojencům Říse). Nosen kolem krku byl nápadný a byl vyhledávaným suvenýrem u Spojenců a Rusů. třídy. Stuha předávaná při ceremonii byla často nahrazována. Dubové listy byly založeny 3.6.1940 a bylo jimi vyznamenáno 882 vojáků (+ 8 německých spojenců). Meče byly zalozeny 15.7.1941 a bylo jimi vyznamenáno 160 muzů (Heer 76, Kriegsmarine 5, Luftwaffe 54, Waffen-SS 24, cizinci 1). Brilianty byly zalozeny 15.7.1941 a bylo jimi vyznamenáno 27 muzů (Heer 11, Kriegsmarine 2, Luftwaffe 12, Waffen-SS 2). Zlatý kříž byl založen 29.12.1944 a mělo jím být vyznamenáno 12 nejzaslouzilejších mužů Říse po vítězné válce. Nakonec jím byl vyznamenán jen Hans-Ulrich Rudel – Stuka eso, který zničil přes 500 sovětských tanků.

Zničení mohlo být provedeno ručním granátem, Panzerfaustem nebo jinou výbusninou. Navíc mohl vyznamenaný ihned dostat Železný kříz II. třídy. Zlatá verze byla za zničení 5 tanků, vyznamenaný mohl obdržet Zelezný kříz I. třídy. Toto vyznamenání nebylo určeno pro protitankové jednotky.
